Music at St. John's has, for many years, been an integral part of our worship at both the 9 a.m. and the 11 a.m. liturgies. We understand that excellence in liturgy, preaching and music can be transformative for people. Presently, St. John's is blessed to have three choirs: Children and Youth Choir, Volunteer Choir and Parish Choir.
Emily Petrenko is the Director of the Youth Choir. The children and youth meet weekly on Thursdays, 4:45 p.m. to 5:15 p.m for rehearsal, and sing at the 11 a.m. service about once every other month. Emily is tireless in her dedication and has tremendous ability with this age group. New members are always welcome. Please contact Emily through the Parish Office for more information.
Our worship at the 9:00 a.m. Eucharist has been greatly enriched by the Volunteer Choir. Over the past few years, the Volunteer Choir has developed and grown steadily under the direction of Jurgen Petrenko. They rehearse on Tuesdays at 5:15 p.m. New members are always welcome. Please contact Jurgen through the Parish Office.
The Parish Choir is composed of members of neighbouring universities' music faculties and their graduates, as well as other fine singers who have come into the parish. The choir leads the congregation in Choral Matins twice monthly, in the occasional Evensong and in the Choral Eucharist on other Sundays. Its repertoire is extensive with an emphasis on contemporary Canadian and European music. In 1989 the choir received the Healy Willan Award granted by the Canada Council. In the summer of 2000, the St. John's Church choir toured England, where they were in residence at St. Paul's Cathedral, at Coventry Cathedral, St. George's Chapel in Windsor and also at Leicester Cathedral. In the summer of 2005, the choir was invited back to sing the daily services for a week at St. Paul's Cathedral in London England, and at Canterbury Cathedral. They are a highly skilled and inspiring group to worship with.
Music for each Sunday is listed in our Order of Service.
